How many of you guys knew a girl in High School who wasn’t the prettiest girl in the world, but then you see her now and she turned out to be supermodel hot? Even though she had a banging personality back then and she was cool, she just didn’t catch your eye. You failed to actually invest some time in getting to know her and now she’s doing the same thing to you? Looking at it in hindsight, you messed up because you thought that you could do better, right? Well, look no further than this years Los Angeles Lakers as the NBA’s ugly girl at Prom, but in a few years will the hottest thing walking earth. And BTW when that time comes, we don’t want no band wagon fans. #LakerNation keeps a list and we know who wasn’t with us at Roy Hibbert and Robert Sacre, so we don’t want you jumpin’ on the ship at D’Angelo Russell and Brandon Ingram.
I watch them night in and night out and I always come back to that thought. Don’t get it twisted, the Lakers aren’t the ugliest girl at prom, they’re getting flirted with, but when people look back at how far they eventually will go, everyone will realize they should have paid attention when they had the chance.
You see flashes of brilliance one night, and then the next you remember that this team has a long way to go before they become a league powerhouse again. It’s frustrating more than anything. You obviously see the potential up and down the roster with D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson, Brandon Ingram, Julius Randle, Larry Nance Jr., Louis Williams, the list goes on and on. The talent is there, the maturity and killer instinct is not.
I guess I got to used to Kobe Bryant and his way of basketball that I’ve failed to realize that these guys aren’t him. They’re different people and players. And even though they may do it a different way than Kobe did, that doesn’t mean it’s wrong. I actually like what Head Coach Luke Walton has done this year in letting the young guys grow gradually instead of rushing their development. It may not produce immediate tangible results, but the wait will be worth it.
I’m too much of a perfectionist and I want it done perfect from the get go, so it pains me to watch this team not live up to what they’re capable of. But I won’t make the mistake and count these Lakers off. I know they may not be the pretty girl at prom night, but when they hit that ripe age and mature, there’s gonna be no one better.
