What is happening in Los Angeles? After not trading future star Brandon Ingram on Sunday night, Mitch Kupchak has been relieved of his duties as Lakers GM. Magic Johnson will now serve as the head of basketball operations and report directly to Jeanie Buss. Didn’t she learn her lesson by watching Phil Jackson up close and personal already? Just because you were a great player or coach, doesn’t mean it will work as the head of basketball operations. She waited what feels like 60 years for Phil Jackson to propose to her, but she couldn’t wait one more year for this young team to work? That’s ridiculous.
Kupchak was fired for NOT trading Ingram away, let me repeat that, Kupchak was fired for NOT trading away a very important pillar for the future. With Magic in the picture, you can all but guarantee one of the young guys in Russell, Ingram, Clarkson, Randle, Zubac or Nance will be gone. How could the Lakers turn their back on someone whose done so much for the franchise in the last few drafts, 2014, 2015, and the 2016 drafts were all an A+. Kupchak also managed to sign Luol Deng, Lou Williams and even Swaggy P, all big contributors this season. Let’s also not forget he got Pau Gasol to play for pennies on the dollar for what he was worth. Kupchak laid the foundation for the future and it seems this move will be the sludge hammer that breaks the floor.
Woj reported that DeMarcus Cousins agent said he could bolt for Los Angeles during free agency. Why not wait? Why not give this team the adequate time needed to gel and grow as a collective unit. At the moment the 1-5 positions are on lock for the next 10 years. You add Boogie to the mix soon and you’ve got a nasty looking squad for years to come. This move screams incompetence on the part of Jeanie Buss, it makes the NBA think that Los Angeles doesn’t have a clue on what they’re doing. This tells me she doesn’t like the direction the team was headed, and if that’s so, I would ask her when is the last time you had your eyes checked? Mitch Kupchak had a plan, and that plan was working. All signs indicate that Magic is now here to change the plan. Let’s just hope Magic works his Magic without altering what Kupchak left for him. If this team doesn’t succeed in the next two years, you can look back at this exact moment and say, “Yup, should have just waited it out.”
I’ll end it by saying this, Dr. Buss wouldn’t have made this decision halfway through the season. This was an emotional decision, and one that wasn’t thoroughly thought out. We never know how far the ripples of our decisions will travel. Let’s just hope the Lakers don’t blow up before the trade deadline on Thursday.
